Support families in Kenya survive pandemic fallout
Story
Inequalities created by climate change, conflict and COVID-19 threaten the lives of the families we work with. Now more than ever they need the programmes we have developed over 20 years that support every family member. Girls protected from teenage pregnancy so they finish school and have better options in life; boys given tools and direction needed to grow into responsible men; mothers kept safe in pregnancy and childbirth; men and women with life skills for growth and empowerment.
Impact
Change does not come overnight but slowly with each person, household, volunteer and donor it grows. Evidence of the impact of 20 years of trust and strong partnerships is seen in our COVID-19 emergency response when 2,784 volunteers from the community reached 924,626 people with help they would not have had otherwise. Our focus on supporting girls and women while involving boys and men in the process addresses inequalities, creates lasting change and lifts communities out of poverty.
Challenge
Drought, economic fallout from the pandemic and the war in Ukraine mean food basics like flour and oil tripled in price and families go hungry. Overwhelmed health systems cannot deliver services. Handwashing is critical but homes don't have running water. We believe stronger women make stronger communities but now girls and women are more vulnerable with higher rates of child marriage, FGM, no access to reproductive healthcare. Without support the poverty cycle continues to the next generation.
