Story
This project will provide supportive services and vocational alternatives to 80 rights-deprived women in the toxic cobalt mines of Kolwezi, DR Congo. Our training will provide women with skills on various topics including on financial and savings-awareness raising concerning associated health risks, informing their human rights. To address the lack of protective equipment, we will distribute safety jackets, helmets, protective gloves, safety shoes for women who must work in the mining industry.
Impact
Women gain more revenue and contribute to the prosperity and well-being of their households. ` As a new iteration of women's businesses grows, so too will support networks and new women-led initiatives. With continued growth in subsequent generations, the cycle of poverty of cycle can at last be broken. With data generated together our academic partner, will strengthen our campaign and advocacy work with government and private industry affiliates to widely tackle inequalities women face.
Challenge
Women are marginalized in the cobalt supply value chain and lack alternative opportunities. Cobalt is an essential mineral used for batteries in cell phones and electronic devices and electric cars. It also plays a key role in fostering energy transitions. By the lack of alternatives, many women forced to work in dangerous conditions. Nobody seems to pay attention to the huge risks inherent to their working conditions, either from the point of view of safe at work or in terms of health.
