Recovery & Resilience

Hunger
Madagascar

Madagascar is currently experiencing extreme food shortages and rising prices caused by the economic impact of COVID-19, pest outbreaks, and the worst drought recorded since 1981. The Deep South is particularly vulnerable to food insecurity, with 1.5 million people in the region, approximately half of the population, unable to find enough food to eat. The number of people living at imminent risk of famine is expected to double over the lean season, the period between planting and harvesting.

COVID-19
Madagascar

The extreme food shortages and economic impacts of COVID-19, combined with the severe climate-induced drought in southern Madagascar, have rendered over 1.14 million people acutely food insecure. Women and children face heightened vulnerability to hunger, contributing to life-threatening surges in the incidence of malnutrition. Since February 2021, SEED's Emergency Food Distribution Programme has been working to improve the immediate health and long-term resilience of food insecure communities.

In Madagascar, 90% of littoral forests have been lost due to human activity, endangering endemic species, including lemurs. Project Ala has increased the viable habitat for these species through corridor reforestation; strengthening regional conservation knowledge and capacity to reduce human impact on these habitats. Building on Phase I, Phase II will expand habitat corridors between forest fragments; addressing unsustainable resource use -protecting the littoral forest and its biodiversity.

Project Renitantely is a sustainable livelihood's initiative with gender equality at its forefront. Since 2016, SEED has developed efficient beekeeping practises and increased yields for almost 80 individuals, across six rural communities in the Anosy region. In a region where 75% of flora and fauna is dependent on insect pollination, these jobs not only provide families with a long-term sustainable income, and a reliable food course, but also protect the areas high animal and plant diversity.

Building a Women's Weaving Cooperative

Economic Empowerment
Madagascar

Madagascar has one of the highest poverty rates in the world, with 77% of the population, including 90% in the southeast, surviving on less than US$1.90 per day. Women are particularly affected by Madagascar's poverty as they are restricted in generating an income due to entrenched cultural limitations and domestic responsibilities. Project Mahampy, Phase II, aims to improve the sustainability of mahampy reed weaving as a traditional women's livelihood activity in southeast Madagascar.

Threatened biodiversity in Madagascar

Threatened biodiversity in Madagascar

Animals & Biodiversity
Madagascar

Nearly 20% of known animal species and 60% of known plant species in Madagascar are threatened with extinction, alongside a 44% decline in forest cover since the 1950s. On top of these alarming statistics, almost 80% of the human population lives below the international poverty line and communities in rural areas are often dependent on the declining forest resources. Since 2010 SEED has been working to preserve and protect the threatened biodiversity and ecosystems before we lose them forever.
