Mission

Project Amazonas is a Peruvian-USA non-profit, non-sectarian and non-political organization dedicated to humanitarian, conservation, education and research activities in the Peruvian Amazon region of South America. We are dedicated to supporting the livelihoods and the futures of indigenous and other peoples living in remote areas of the Peruvian Amazon. We do this through regular and sustained medical programs and health worker training, as well as through community-level education and sustainable development initiatives. Project Amazonas is actively conserving the biological richness of the Amazon in the rainforest reserves that it operates. With the cooperation of local communities, these reserves host ecological and ethnological research and education activities by Peruvian and foreign scientists and students. Our objective is nothing less than improving the lives of Amazon residents while conserving the biological riches and functionality of the Amazon rainforest.

Peru

You hear a lot about Amazon DEforestation, but not much about REforestation! At our field stations we are working to grow native high quality timber, medicinal and fruit trees for reforestation of degraded areas, and to promote community-level reforestation activities. These trees sequester carbon, protect and create wildlife habitat, support biodiversity, and serve as living bank accounts for rural communities. A small investment now can result in a lifetime of benefits for the Amazon.

Disaster Recovery
COVID-19
Peru

Peru is one of the hardest-hit countries by Covid-19, and the Peruvian Amazon region has suffered particularly harshly. Hospitals and health systems have collapsed, and rural communities have been largely abandoned to deal with the pandemic on their own. There is literally no oxygen for Covid patients dying in the lungs of the planet. We are raising funds to directly supply medications to small rural communities, and to aid civic groups providing care to the poorest citizens of Iquitos, Peru.
